The Physical & Emotional Toll of Male Breasts

Gynecomastia is a common condition that causes the enlargement of breast tissue in males. It can affect men of all ages, from infants to adults. Gynecomastia may be caused by hormone imbalances, specifically an increase in estrogen levels relative to testosterone. Gynecomastia can significantly impact a man’s physical and emotional health.

The physical symptoms of gynecomastia can include breast tenderness and swelling, which can be uncomfortable and painful. The appearance of male breasts can also cause embarrassment and shame, leading to social anxiety and a negative body image. Men with gynecomastia often avoid certain activities, such as going to the beach or pool, due to a lack of confidence. Dr. Z performs gynecomastia surgery to help men achieve the masculine chest they desire.

Gynecomastia Surgery Corrects:

  • Excess breast tissue
  • Enlarged areolas
  • Sagging or stretched skin in the chest area
  • Asymmetrical chest appearance
  • Emotional distress caused by gynecomastia

Your Gynecomastia Session

During your gynecomastia surgery, you will be given anesthesia to ensure your comfort. The type of anesthesia used will depend on your individual needs and preferences. Dr. Z will use a specialized cannula to remove excess fat from the chest area through liposuction. If there is any excess glandular tissue present, Dr. Z may also use an innovative “puncture removal” technique to remove it through a small puncture incision, leaving behind a virtually invisible scar.

If desired, Dr. Z can also perform pectoral etching during the same procedure to create a more visible definition of the muscular contours by removing fat from the edges of the pectoralis muscles and axilla. The entire procedure can be completed within one hour and is performed on an outpatient basis, so you can return home the same day. Dr. Z and his team will provide detailed pre- and post-operative instructions to ensure a smooth recovery.

Candidates for Gynecomastia:

  • Men who are in good overall health
  • Men who have stabilized their weight and are close to their desired body weight
  • Men who have excess breast tissue that causes discomfort or embarrassment
  • Men who have realistic expectations for the outcome of the surgery
  • Men who do not smoke or are willing to quit smoking before and after the surgery
  • Men who are willing to follow all pre- and post-operative instructions

Your Journey to Recovery: Side Effects & Downtime

After gynecomastia surgery, you may experience swelling, bruising, and discomfort. These are normal and can be managed with pain medication and compression garments. You must avoid strenuous activity and exercise for several weeks while recovering. Most patients return to work and other activities within a week or two. Dr. Z and his team will provide detailed instructions on how to care for yourself during your recovery period.
